The Green Party of the United States is a federation of state parties. This has always effectively been a candidate co-nomination pact. Those state parties who can, nominate the same candidate for president, increasing the chance of that candidate.

National has often tried to be more than this, even though the Green movement is founded on generalities rather than ideology: the Four Pillars, and 10 Key Values. There’s a very long and rarely-read platform. There are resolutions on this or that issue for the world to mostly ignore. There are discussions on issues, which is good, but the moderation is used to silence much of it, which is not. There are even attempts to kick member states out of the federation on ideological grounds. That serves no purpose other than to deprive the next presidential candidate of ballot access in those states.

The result has been a party that presidential candidates avoid. Cornel West is the latest big name to think twice and go elsewhere. Now Jill Stein is back for her third run. That’s fine with me, as she’s a good candidate and is polling well. But I insist on fair process for all the candidates. That, and support for our nominee once we have one, should always be the NC’s main focus.

I’ve been an alternate for a year, participate on the discussion lists, and am familiar with the structure and voting system. I know what the NC is for, and I know what I’m doing. Send me to keep doing it!
